Free Book: Hannah Coulter
Hannah Coulter is one of my favorite of Wendell Berry’s books, second only to Jayber Crow, and it’s the book I usually recommend first when someone asks me where they ought to begin digging into his fiction. It’s short, it’s beautiful, and it will leaving you hungry for more.
This month, Christianaudio is giving away the Hannah Coulter audiobook for free. That’s right, not the digital ebook, but the digital audiobook. Download it, put it on your ipod or burn it to a CD, then go for a Sunday drive and enjoy the elegant simplicity one of Wendell Berry’s masterworks.
Here’s the link. Enjoy.

I’ve seen Wendell Berry’s books recommended so many times, but have been unsure if I’d actually like them, so I’ve been quite reluctant to part with my money. This download is ideal for someone like me -thank you.

This book is so very good. A great place to start for anyone who hasn’t read his stuff. And I love the narrator–a perfectly sophisticated drawl for a Berry book.

I bought this a few months back and it’s well worth it. Did you guys notice that the rest of their Berry books are all 5$?

I’ve read a couple of his essay collections, but a good friend of mine is always raving about this one. Thanks for the link!

Thanks for the head’s up! I’ve downloaded it (to hear anew what I’ve read before) & passed the link along to a couple friends.

Downloaded. Thanks! My only Wendell Berry experience was reading Jayber Crow a few years ago, so I’m looking forward to give something else a try.

So very cool! I’ve never read anything by Wendell Berry, but he’s been on my list to read!

I’ve had a crush on Wendell Berry since I was fourteen. It’s not as bad as my Christopher Foyle crush, but nearly. I wouldn’t admit that publicly, except that my husband has a crush on Paula Deen and Laura Bush, and somehow that makes it all even.
Along these lines, I’ve been spazzing out this past week about this website:
http://librivox.org/
Oodles and oodles of free audio books. Some of the readings are wonky (i.e. there’s apparently a vulcan female in Chekhov’s _The Cherry Orchard._) But there are tons of winners, and most of the classics are there. You can live stream or upload at least some of them. I’m finally getting some housework done as a result.
This site would also be an excellent place for older homeschoolers to volunteer. Readings on Librivox can benefit the blind and others with reading disabilities.

Oooh, Christopher Foyle as in a Foyle’s War? Love!
Good tip re: librivox & housework…. Now if the kids oblige and stay relatively quiet.

Atta’ girl. Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle. The man could take out Chuck Norris with a fly rod and an eyebrow flex. Best superhero of all time. Better than yoda. Better than Paul Simon. I write him in every election, but to no avail.
Those bonus episodes at the end were not so good. But the originals. Gosh.
Regarding housework, Loren. You make the kids do the housework, and then you go make some raspberry Earl Gray and listen to Librivox. That’s what I meant.
OK, that’s not what I meant. But it would be awesome.

Pure wisdom, Becca: Foyle, kids working, tea…. I like the way your mind works.

Was thrilled when I saw this. I’ve picked this up at the bookstore and put it back down so many times. Now it’s on my iPod and next in line in my audiobook list (currently over halfway through The Brothers Karamazov).

Thumbs up on Christopher Foyle. Thumbs up on Librovox. I have to say, though I haven’t read/listened-to it yet, it’s looking pretty good for this book. Not that high praise from everyone else around here isn’t good enough, but all these things seem to be following a trend that ends in Hannah Coulter being a very worthwhile read (er, listen).

It’s forcing me to create an account, but then at checkout it gives me an inscrutable machine-type error message (three non-words connected with underscores) and will go no further. Hrm.

Well, I declare–I’m plum tickled to listen to this one.

I downloaded this and it’s next in line. Thanks for the heads up.
Regarding Librivox, I’m a longtime fan and usually have something going from there daily. Right now I’m in the middle of Pride and Prejudice. For what it’s worth, I recommend the solo readings. They are usually done by excellent readers who have an exceptional love for the book, else they’d likely not go to the trouble and take the time. Some of the collaborations are ok, but the stories seem to flow better with one reader. At least they do in my mind. Do check out Librivox if you’ve not done so already.

I just finished listening to this. She is an excellent reader for an excellent story.
Librivox is chock full of GK Chesterton. For the newbie to audio books I recommend “Treasure Island” (the 2nd version I think). Character voices and choruses. That voluteer went above and beyond.

Sitting here outside Baja Burrito hearing everyone talking about commenting on the Rabbit Room made me want to comment. But I DO love Hannah Coulter, so I feel this is legit.
