Coffee and Books
A couple of years ago we put a lot of thought and effort into opening up a Rabbit Room Coffee Tavern & Bookstore just south of town in a place called Lenox Village. But after a lot of hand-wringing and number-crunching we finally came to the conclusion that it wasn’t the right time, though we were pretty sure it was the right place. So we put the idea aside and went on about our business of writing books, making music, and mooting hutches. Looking back on the idea now, I think we realize that it would have required a lot more work than we wanted to devote to it. That little shop would have taken the place of Fiddler’s Green, and The Monster in the Hollows, and who knows what else. We mourned the dream a little but I think we quickly recognized the dream for what it was.
It’s funny how things come back around though, isn’t it? In the time since, our good friend Winn Elliot has taken over the Edgehill Cafe and turned it into a thriving coffeehouse, and just this past Saturday he and his wife opened up a brand new cafe in Lenox Village as we’d so nearly done two years ago. Right away they asked the Rabbit Room to be a part of the new shop. We were happy to oblige and can now announce that Rabbit Room books, music, and mugs are on sale at the Edgehill Cafe at Lenox Village.
To celebrate the opening, we’d like to invite folks to come hang out this Friday evening around 6pm. We don’t have anything special planned, but when did good fellowship ever need a plan? Come just to say hello. Sit for a spell and drink some great coffee, or tea, or hot chocolate. Make a new friend. Visit with old ones. Pull up a seat by the fireplace and read a good book. It’ll be a mini-moot of sorts. We hope to see you there.

I would love to visit there while in town for the BTLOG concert at the Ryman! The idea of a Rabbit room coffee shop and bookstore would also be wonderful, but this sounds great as well. I only wish I could join you all for the opening celebration Friday evening. Somehow I’ve got to get a Rabbit Room mug though! Could those be sold in the online store?

We’ve tried selling them in the store before but the post office breaks about 1 in 3 no matter how well they are packaged. It was more hassle than it was worth. We might give it another try sometime once we get some better shipping options in place.

Ah, I see! That could be a problem. Well, I’ll just plan to pick one up when I’m in town next month. Keep up the great work!

Officailly jealous of Nashville residents right now. That looks like a great coffee place!

That’s fantastic news! Wish I was closer.

I was planning to check out the new cafe soon, this sounds like the perfect time!

Once again, the virtual RR leaves me yearning for less-digital community with the folks here. Someday, Nashville. Someday.

@Peter B, We should have “mini-moots” around the country for those of us not in Nashville!
It would be nice to somehow find other Rabbit Roomers in our areas so we could meet up.

*Gets hit by a lightning bolt from heaven because of the nature of my coveting.*
That person in the picture looks like my sister. Except shorter.
Dang, I wish I could just buy a plane ticket and pop over to Nashville right now. What I would give…

Adam: I approve. Are you located anywhere near The Illustrious S.D. Smith? I, unfortunately, am not, but it would do my heart good to know that others might bask in his actual presence.
I find it curious that you went from Larrivee to Martin (particularly since my brother-in-law would love nothing more than to own the former). What are all the cool kids using these days?

So great to hear that more Rabbit Room stuff will be out in the world! This place sounds great. I can’t be there, so I’ll just tell my Nashville friends to visit instead.

I don’t drink tea.
Or imbibe Hot C.
But that wall looks warm
And the tone doth agree.
I’d love to be one of the singles and pairs.
But the picture at the top only shows four chairs!
And I’m thinking, “my stars, well I’m sure I’d be tardy.
To the warm-wall, four-seater Tea and C party.”
And I’d have to bring my own can soda wrapped in tin-foil with my name written on it.
And where would I decamp to and who would I chew the fat with?
Everybody’s reading books…

Well, my heart and soul will be there even though my body will not. I lift my mug to dreams coming around in due time, and to the hope that ever more warm drinks, comfortable chairs, and kindred spirits find hearths to gather ’round across the land. Best wishes to Edgehill and all who stop by Friday evening.

I am so happy this place opened. I live in Lenox Village and very much a welcome addition!

That is a beautiful sight.

I’m totally going to try to be there. I’ll bring my brother too. He’ll want a mug. Looks like a cool place.

How lovely! Wish I could be there Friday night. Guess I can have some tea in my Rabbit mug and a good book in your honor.
Adam: I agree. If anybody is within reasonable distance of Ocala, FL, there’s a free AP show on the day after Thanksgiving and a Starbucks in which to mini-moot!
(okay, it’s a long shot… But I thought I’d try.
)

In a heartbeat! There’s just the wee challenge of distance: we live 45 minutes west of Lake Tahoe and won’t be out that way for a bit…with God defining “bit.”
Still, even though we’re unable to rejoice with you and fellowship in person, know there’re lots and lots and lots of us, scattered as far as the wind may throw echoes, and we. love. you. all.
Congratulations! And, lest I forget,
All of Heaven’s best to you and yours,
Margret

If I am blessed with any kind of life-changing money, I will do this here where I live in NC, along with my longtime dream to start “Rabbit Room Radio” (Sirius/XM/Online)

At least Nashville is closer to Knoxville than Lawrence, KS, where our current favorite (Christian-run) coffeeshop-bookstore-art gallery is located. (See ) Will enjoy stopping in sometime when I’m heading somewhere West.

Peter: I’m not sure how close I am to S.D. Smith. He doesn’t have his exact whereabouts on his blog but some searching revealed a few hints and some familiar places. It appears he might be a little south of where I live.
As to my guitars, that’s not to say Larrivee doesn’t make nice instruments. I have a Do3-R Indian Rosewood model and it’s a great guitar. My Martin D-18 GE was a gift from my grandfather and I just took a liking to that classic Martin warmth and tone. My D-18 also has the lowest action I’ve ever played. Currently however, I’m playing a custom, signature model Thompson guitar. It’s African Blackwood and sounds incredible! A while back I shot a promo for luthier, Bob Thompson, which shows my guitar being built and me playing it at the end. http://vimeo.com/21390976 (I’m the guy on the right.)

I went to Hutchmoot hoping to be disappointed in the whole lot of them. Unfortunately, these people are as awesome as they seem, so I’m just going to be lonely for the rest of my life now not living in Nashville.
RR should make action figures to assuage our pain — or at least meaningful household products.
A Jennifer Trafton pepper shaker, for instance. A Ron Block Identity mirror (“Who are you, really?”) with magnetic exchangeable beards. A Jason Gray yard stick. A Jonathan Rogers bust/glasses holder. A Pete Peterson cheese cutter. (Wow.)
Becca: you just blew my mind with those product ideas (though I’m not sure how many people would want a Jonathan Rogers bust-holder.
I want a Jonathan Rogers bust! I could put it above my door for talking ravens to perch on and it would fill me with vast intellectual thoughts whenever I looked at it.
Wow… I meant… well.
Never mind what I meant. ‘Serves him right for not blogging lately.
I want the Pete cheese slicer. My kids will say, “Who cut the cheese?” And I will answer, “Pete did.”
How far do you have to go to get a comment deleted here?

Alternatively, Becca, you could just come visit our house, where Pete can cut your cheese and I can shake your pepper. Free of charge.

Had a great time hanging with you guys tonight. Thanks for supporting the Edgehill Café and the RR. I’m so glad there’s a place in Nashville for just such a hang. Next time, backgammon!

It’s only 2.5 miles from my doorstep to this wonderful new establishment. Saw the RR crowd there last night, chatted with Pete and Jonathan and Stephen, enjoyed a great mocha. A most welcome addition to the neighborhood!

Becca: There would need to be Andy Gullahorn beard extensions (of particular interest to you this month, no?). And an electronic ping-pong paddle that told you “Good game,” even if it was a bad game. An Eric Peters hood ornament (chrome, of course). And Evie’s candy COATing. (Sorry, that one hurt a little bit.)

Does anyone happen to know how close to Clarksville TN. this is? It looks like I’m going to be there the week before Christmas for a few days and I would love to get a mug to replace the one I broke.
