One Minute Review: Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson’s newest movie has been given lot of advertising but is still mainly showing in “art house” theaters. Thomas knows how to get to one of these places, and he saw Moonrise Kingdom. The One Minute Review is now available. Is it quirky? Find out.
And if you haven’t seen The Amazing Spiderman yet, the One Minute Review of that little film may be found right here: The One Minute Review

Yeah, really lame when directors think they need to throw in stupid scenes like that to ruin an otherwise excellent movie. We need more clean films of the likes of City of Ember and Hugo.

Bummer. I shall not be seeing this one; thanks for the warning.

Cannot wait to see this.

The inclusion of that scene says something profoundly disturbing about our culture.

Probably my favorite movie so far this year. Anderson is a great director, and Thomas is spot-on with his view on the two kids that star in this. Don’t let fear over those 30 seconds turn you away. For adults, you have to see this movie.

While I agree with Thomas that it’s a bad parenting choice to let your kids act out that particular scene, and that I did not enjoy watching it, there’s another point of view to consider. After I saw the movie, a friend said to me that he felt like it was made from the point of view of a twelve year old. The movie suddenly clicked for me and I began to like it a lot more. Right down to the curly-cue font used in the credits, this movie is a love story as a kid would tell it. Now, imagine if that kid did not grow up in a Christian home, or was perhaps an orphan (like our main character). That kid doesn’t have the same sense of morals that you and I do. There’s no telling what he’s been influenced by, and from that point of view, I see it as a fairly innocent scene.
Feel free to disagree with me, but I remember all too well the things my non-church friends told me about in the locker room at public school in the 6th grade.

All good points, and I won’t try to dissuade anyone from seeing it; I just think that if there’s a scene like that — whether or not it is based on reality — which has stuck with Thomas and is still disturbing him, then I would prefer not to insert it into my memory.
Your mileage may vary, make up your own mind, etc.

“Your mileage may vary” … I like the way you said that, Peter. Agreed.

Thomas, I had the same exact experience and feelings with that scene. Never mind the parents, who were probably busy cashing the kids’ paychecks, but where was Social Services? They recently took a baby away from it’s parents because they took their baby from the hospital to get another opinion about it’s health problem. Surely THIS situation warrants a look-see?
Sigh. What is this society coming to?
