One Minute Review: Lawless
This is the One Minute Review of Lawless, a movie about backwood moonshiners in the 1920s. With a stellar cast and the director of “The Proposition,” what could possibly go wrong? Good question.

Guy was amazing! Tom was terrific! Worst part was that the youngest brother (whatever his name is) ended up saving the day instead of Hardy!
Also, Gary Oldman! And you couldn’t put him to better use?! He was in three vapid scenes.

I usually agree with these reviews, but this time I have to disagree to an extent. I think that saying the movie doesn’t go anywhere is a bit harsh, and I thought the epilogue was fitting. Basically the movie is about how, for the Bondurants, family loyalty was the only thing that had any semblance of security or meaning in their lives. The picture I got from watching it was one where the lines were blurred in every aspect of their lives except family. I came away from it with the understanding that I had been told one of the more interesting parts of a bigger story, and I really liked that the movie left me with that sense.
Also I don’t know that writing the characters off as simply being ignorant and violent is all that appropriate either. They were definitely violent, and in a lot of ways they were ignorant, but they are JUST ignorant and violent. So much of who these characters really are is implied and left unspoken, which is fitting given the context of who they were and where they came from.
