One Minute Review: Life of Pi
This is the One Minute Review of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. A boy, a boat, a tiger, and a confused understanding of God. Does it make for good theology, a good story, both, or neither? Fr. Thomas McKenzie has an opinion, if not all the answers. For more reviews, including Lincoln, Anna Karenina, Flight, Skyfall and more head over to www.OneMinuteReview.com

I always enjoy watching your reviews. I couldn’t agree more with this one. I had a friend who, upon hearing I’d seen this film, made a rather shocked face and discreetly informed me that it had bad theology. She almost seemed to be encouraging me to repent and confess the error of my ways in having watched it.
And I do understand her position- and there IS bad theology within the film. That said, I found there to be so much beauty in it. Pi was seeking. He was searching for his Creator. For me, the purposed determination he had in seeking so overshadowed the cobbled together myriad belief system he developed.

Haven’t seen the movie yet but had planned on going this week, now on your review, I will put out the money to see it in 3D versus regular digital. Just wondering though, did you read the book? How does it compare to the book?

Well, lots of things have bad theology. Unless you’re particularly susceptible to being swayed by bad theology, I don’t see the harm in enjoying something with that problem if it’s good in other respects. Christians shouldn’t watch just anything the world watches, of course, if it portrays sexual acts and such. I remember I watched UK’s The Office because it got good reviews, and even though the joking was constantly coarse and I wasn’t really enjoying it that much, I kept going hoping it would get better. It didn’t. I felt like I needed to repent after doing that. But that’s the sort of thing I think we should feel convicted by. Just because there’s an incorrect theological system being portrayed, that shouldn’t necessarily be a make or break issue.
